George Orwell: the world that made him and the world that he made

George Orwell: the world that made him and the world that he made In-Person

The Friends of the University of Sydney Library is delighted to host a talk by Emeritus Professor Peter Marks, as he explores the international influences that shaped one of the 20th century's most significant writers. With his deep expertise on dystopian fiction and Orwell's works, Professor Marks offers fresh perspectives on this literary giant's lasting impact.

From the streets of Paris and London to colonial Burma, revolutionary Spain and beyond, Orwell's experiences across nations profoundly influenced his vision. His works—now translated into dozens of languages—continue to provide a powerful lens through which we understand authoritarian control, surveillance, and the manipulation of truth.

This talk examines how Orwell not only reflected the tumultuous world he inhabited but also helped create our modern understanding of it.
