Featuring three ensembles and the premiere of a new work for a quintet of Western and Vietnamese instruments, the performances will celebrate the shared values and music marking practices between jazz, contemporary pop and Vietnamese traditional music forms – in particular, the art of improvised preluding and the role of embellishment and interpretation in renditions of “standard” songs.

The Sydney Conservatorium of Music is paving the way in expanding this cultural cooperation; in just the last two years, two jazz student ensembles have spent a week in residence at the Vietnam National Academy of Music in Hanoi, led by Program Leader for Jazz Dr Steve Barry.

The evening will include an overview of the University of Sydney’s recently formed Sydney Vietnam Initiative, in anticipation of the official opening of new research centers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in June.

About the Conservatorium Library Exhibition Program
