Rising from the East: Opera in China

Rising from the East: Opera in China In-Person

The exhibition is based on PhD candidate Jing Cai's research, Redesigning Opera in New Cultural Contexts, showcasing an operatic snapshot of China today; in particular how Chinese practitioners revive western classical operas and invent new contemporary Chinese operas. The exhibition will be organized in an operatic structure, with a three-act format:

Act 1: Reviving Western Operas
National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), is the driving-force to promote opera culture in China today. In the last decade, nearly 70 operas were staged; two-thirds of which were Western operas. The first act shows the strategies of reviving and developing western masterpieces in China by featuring repertoire: Turandot, Die Fledermaus, Rigoletto, Der Fliegendle Holländer and Aida.

Act 2: Chinese Opera – Jinsha River Composed by Lei Lei
Jinsha River is a fusion of Chinese regional music and Western operatic techniques, showing a unique blend of styles. This opera premiered in July 2017 at the NCPA, then reviving again in the following year. The second Act shows how the composer Lei Lei created the operatic music by featuring her collection of Tibetan music and dances in Diqing, Yunnan Province, where the story happened.

Act 3: Operatic Data and the NCPA
The third act highlights the development of the NCPA in the past decade by showcasing significant data and materials, which includes a valuable book Theatre Operation Management: The National Centre for the Performing Arts Model of Structuring, the first of its kind in China on theatre operation and management, written by the first President of the NCPA, Ping Chen.
