Sydney Rare Book Week 2019: Giorgione in Sydney

Sydney Rare Book Week 2019: Giorgione in Sydney In-Person

Co-convened by RBSC and the State Library of NSW, Sydney Rare Book Week 2019 is a smaller version of the well-established Melbourne Rare Book Week, comprising a Sydney-wide week-long program of free talks and events open to the general public and celebrating the importance of books and literature.

Rare Books & Special Collections at the University of Sydney Library holds a first edition copy of Dante’s Commedia/Divine Comedy printed in Venice in 1497. A chance discovery in 2017 by a Librarian of an inscription and sketch in the back of this book has revealed the inscription to be a notice of the death of the elusive Venetian Renaissance artist, Giorgione, and the sketch, of the Madonna and Child,  has since been attributed to him.

Jaynie Anderson, Professor Emeritus in Art History at the University of Melbourne, and international expert on Giorgione will discuss this remarkable find and its implications for rewriting Venetian art history.
