Data visualisation is an essential research skill that enables you to explore the trends and relationships present in your data, and to communicate the results of your research to the world. This introductory-level session covers best practices in creating visualisations to communicate your work and introduces you to some useful new tools for exploring and analysing your data. Note: this session includes content that overlaps with the session "Getting started with data visualisation".

Objectives:

• Understand the principles and best practices of data visualisation
• Understand how message, data type, and intended audience will influence how you visualise data
• Understand how exploratory data visualisation differs from data visualisation for communication
• Gain knowledge of useful visualisation tools, including Excel, Jupyter notebooks for Python, and Paraview
• Gain knowledge of resources, and support available at the University to assist you in visualising your research

Format: Presentation, with some hands-on exercises

Target audience: Researchers and HDR students who need to visualise data for analysis or presentation purposes
