Rare Bites: Material Cultures of 'Magic' In-Person
Rare Books and Special Collections presents: Material Cultures of ‘Magic.’
Two Ethiopic Coptic Christian magic scrolls are the point of departure for this Rare Bites talk. It will consider these works as a particular type of material culture, exploring who may have created them and their context of use. The remarkable images they contain will be considered in relation to associated but much earlier ‘magical’ material culture: in particular Coptic Handbooks of Ritual Power from Late Antiquity. Could these objects have played a role in personal health, relationships and/or protection?
Speaker: Associate Professor Jay Johnston is an interdisciplinary scholar in the School of Literature, Art and Media, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Sydney.
