Studies in the Gamelan and dance traditions of Bali and Aceh (Indonesia) In-Person

The study and performance of Balinese gamelan music has been an active part of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music curriculum since 1999, embracing disciplines of music education, jazz and composition. Celebrating the Conservatorium’s links with the gamelan and dance traditions of Indonesia, this exhibition explores research by PhD candidate, Niall Edwards-FitzSimons, on the sitting dances of Aceh (West Sumatra), as well as the research of ethnomusicologist, Edward Herbst, on the repatriation of ethnographic materials recorded in Bali in the 1920s and 30s. Discover the impact Balinese gamelan music is having on the output of Conservatorium composition students, as well as the relationship between Balinese gamelan and Balinese religious belief and social organisation.
